A whole takes shape through the relationships between its parts.

I try to understand what each part needs to know about those relationships to act alongside the others: what it receives, what it passes on, what it expects, and the conditions under which it can continue.

A service might, for example, continue some of its work when a dependency is unavailable while indicating what it needs to defer. That distinction allows the other parts to understand the situation and adjust their own behavior.

Change makes this question more concrete. One part appears, another withdraws, a third resumes. What can the remaining parts still understand and do? What allows us to recognize continuity through these transformations?

For me, Sphaera carries this inquiry: how might identity, local observation, and relationships allow autonomous entities to compose a shared presence?

To examine it, I try to describe the conditions of that composition and observe what happens when they change. The limits and disagreements encountered are part of what experience can teach us.

I want to be able to describe what makes a whole, precisely enough to test it and clearly enough to discuss it.
